III. Timeline

I am much less enthused about the completeness of this timeline compared to the usual high standard found in other American Experience websites which I use.

IV. Maps

The interactive maps are particularly well done. Maps from three different wars (WWI, WWII, and Korea) remind us of MacArthur's lengthy career.

The Korean War maps beat anything I have seen elsewhere.

V. People & Events

Concise material on the "Bonus March."

Note the article on MacArthur's father's role in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.

Website Spotlight: Cuban Missile Crisis

Disclosure: This blog post is my first in what I hope will be a regular series. Just to keep myself from worrying that this post is not yet good enough to post, I am going with it as it is now.

I require all my students to bring their laptop each day to class. The overall material pertinent to the Cuban Missile Crisis is contained in the Cold War module on our wiki. We profitably used the following excellent websites:

1. John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Go to the page on the Cuban Missile Crisis. Then click on the Interactive Microsite.

2. National Security Archive at George Washington University. The portion containing the surveillance photos was particularly exciting for our class.

3. American Experience Presidents series: John F. Kennedy, section devoted to primary sources. Go to "Letters" to view correspondence between JFK and the Soviet leader.

Final musings: Ideally I should flesh out this material more fully, but I hope this initial post at least gets me out of the blocks.

No Student Laptops Permitted in this Course. Really?

Symptomatic of the change I have made in the way I approach my classes was crystallized for me several months ago when a group of my favorite professor colleagues asserted that they now prohibit students using laptops during class sessions. Previously, I had done the same thing.

I meekly observed that I have decided to move in the opposite direction, intentionally building my classes around the use of student laptops to take advantage of the extraordinary riches--carefully chosen--of the Internet, that "virtual" knowledge which is available at their fingertips.

A prohibition of laptops represented--I will speak just for myself--my prior approach to teaching: professor-centered, lecture-oriented, cover-as-much-of-the-material-as-possible. Taking this approach, it made sense to remove the distraction for the student that his or her laptop represented. They would not be giving ME their full attention.

My feeling is one of being all alone. It is scary but somehow I feel it right for me at this stage of my career. I am certainly convinced it is right for my students. But I still am scared.

What is your reaction? Am I right to pursue my approach?

Getting Back into My Blogging

I am very embarrassed that I have neglected this blog. For the last year I devoted time to perfecting (in so far as possible) my wiki.

In the last few days, I have begun to use Twitter more regularly.

Maybe one of the last in society to do so, I am now on Facebook, with both a profile and a page.

Since my HP laptop has no built-in webcam, I purchased a Logitech webcam--which I am still trying to learn how to use and intend to get active with Skype. Eventually I hope to use it in my classroom to connect with our students in semester-abroad locations. For now I will limit myself to practicing with my wife and several close-by colleagues.

I have begun to use my recently-purchased Coolpix digital camera and have learned to upload pictures to my laptop. The dumb picture of me I am using at the moment for all my external websites was one I had taken of me for a passport picture. Maybe I can manage to update my image a bit with my Coolpix.

I need to begin commenting on blogs and thanking others for what I have learned from them.

My thanks go to several experienced bloggers who have given me the confidence to get off the dime and begin my blog.

Will Richardson's post on why blogging was still hard even for him (and the insightful comments to that post from his readers) nudged me forward.

The wise admonition from Darren Rowse that all bloggers have started from zero struck me as particularly apt. So, taking his warning, I hereby overcome my desire for perfectionism and simply send this post into the blogosphere.

I was reluctant to have my identity revealed to all who might read my posts. A posting by Vicki Davis (her specific issue represented a slightly different angle than my own hesitations) convinced me to move beyond my comfort zone and flesh out my blogger profile.

A Lifetime of Learning

Since I urge my students to be prepared to continue learning during their entire lifetime, my blog posts will target my own attempts at doing so.

In 1975 I had a conversion experience religiously. Recently, thanks to the exciting material I took away from Will Richardson's Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms and Justin Reich and Thomas Daccord's Best Ideas for Teaching with Technology: A Practical Guide for Teachers, by Teachers, I experienced a second rebirth--in my teaching style. At about the same time, insights from Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat convinced me that the Web is here to stay and that I, along with my students, must "learn to navigate that virtual world."
